DPDP Compliance for Education & EdTech
Schools, colleges, coaching centres and EdTech platforms process the data of students — most of whom are children — plus guardians and staff. That puts you squarely inside the DPDP Act’s strictest provisions.
The personal data you handle
A quick reality check. If any of this looks familiar, the DPDP Act applies to you.
Why DPDP applies to Education & EdTech
Because most learners are children, education is one of the few areas the DPDP Act singles out for heightened duties. Processing a minor’s data requires verifiable parental consent, and behavioural tracking or targeted advertising directed at children is prohibited. Every school and EdTech platform is a Data Fiduciary and is accountable for how student data is collected, shared and retained.
Sector note: Beyond DPDP: children’s-data provisions (Section 9) apply, and EdTech apps must audit third-party SDKs/trackers embedded in their products.
What to keep in mind
The points that cause most of the DPDP exposure in Education & EdTech.
Children’s data is the core issue
Verifiable parental consent is required before processing a minor’s data, and you cannot track children’s behaviour or serve them targeted ads. Build age-gating and a parental-consent flow, not just a tick-box.
Audit your app’s trackers & SDKs
Analytics, ad and crash SDKs inside a learning app often ship children’s data to third parties. Inventory every SDK and remove or gate anything that profiles students.
Proctoring is sensitive surveillance
Exam webcam/screen monitoring captures highly sensitive data. Collect the minimum, tell students clearly, restrict access and set a short retention period.
Don’t reuse student data for marketing
Using enrolment or alumni contacts for promotions is a new purpose that needs fresh consent — teaching data is not a marketing list.
How dpflo helps Education & EdTech
